A San Diego California native, Jim has spent most of his life on or near the water. During his youth, he either paddled his inflatable raft on San Diego bay, pin heading for free trips on the local sport boats or paddled his long board out to the kelp beds of La Jolla. He started La Jolla Kayak Fishing guide service in 1995, and has been on the leading edge of this fast growing sport.
Jim holds the distinction of landing the first, and only, California caught Marlin from a kayak. He has also landed Thresher sharks up to 200 pounds and a personal best Yellowtail of 45 pounds all while fishing the La Jolla coast from his Ocean Kayak. Some of Jim’s proudest accomplishments are guiding more clients to billfish from a kayak than any other kayak fishing guide in the world, starting the La Jolla Kayak Fishing Billfish club, and setting kayak fishing records with a 65-pound bull dorado and a 125 pound yellowfin tuna.
Jim is an IGFA certified, and California Department of Fish and game licensed guide. He runs La Jolla Kayak Fishing Adventures instructional trips locally as well as guided trips to northern and southern Baja. A contributing writer with several fishing publications, Jim loves the opportunity to give tips and relay stories of successful kayak fishing adventures. In 2007 Jim began working on a video project titled “Kayak Fishing: Game On,” which was followed by “Kayak Fishing: Game On 2”. These kayak fishing adventure films were so well received that the project morphed into a now airing TV show called “The Kayak Fishing Show with Jim Sammons,” which can be seen each week on WFN, the World Fishing Network. During the show you will see Jim and his friends travel the world targeting some of the baddest fish around from their kayaks.
“I am very excited to join the GreenFish Ambassador team. Being made up of anglers themselves, GreenFish has a great model of promoting sustainable fishing and catch and release from within the fishing industry, and I’m looking forward to helping them promote their brand and message throughout the kayak fishing community.”
